Silence is... Mouth

Woman, Finland
As a Finn, I find this concept deeply connected to our culture—we live under the ice, and for half the year, it seems to govern us. It silences us.

Winter carries a quiet dread; it brings a collective melancholy. We withdraw, avoiding face-to-face encounters, retreating into our homes. To a Finn, winter paints Finland in shades of grey.

For me, perfect silence is like constructing a mental altar, placing fragments of my life upon it—memories, drawings, sculptures, stones. Silence exists in the space between inhale and exhale. I find that same stillness when I play billiards. It emerges in the split second between the strike of the cue ball and its collision with the others. The noise around me fades; silence is something I feel.

Silence is...Space

man, Lithuania
To me, silence is about being fully present with my own thoughts—a state that is both mental and physical, though I find the mental aspect especially vital for our well-being.

Even when we’re physically alone, our minds can still be crowded with thoughts about work or the concerns of others. Yet in solitude, we often find the clarity to determine what we truly want, because we are relaxed and in genuine company with ourselves. This inner space is how I experience silence.

I treasure moments of quiet. When I choose to be alone, I rarely listen to music; I prefer to simply be with my thoughts, which are profoundly important to me. In many ways, silence organizes and refines my thinking.

Additionally, the relationship between silence and photography holds a special significance for me. When you look at a photograph, you don’t hear a sound—the image speaks for itself, stirring emotions and connections. Similarly, when I take a photograph, I deliberately isolate everything around me to focus entirely on capturing that moment.

Silence is...Forest

man, Finland
In Finland, the forest is the embodiment of silence. For me, silence represents freedom—a welcomed escape from the constant clamor of daily life.

When I stroll through the deep, still woods, the noise of the world falls away, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the whisper of the wind.

In those moments, all the pressures and stresses simply dissolve, leaving me with a profound sense of peace. It is in this serene solitude that I truly reconnect with myself, finding clarity and renewal in the quiet communion with nature.

Silence is...Peace

man, poland
Silence is a gateway to inner peace—a gentle invitation to let go of the day's stress and reconnect with the soul. Whether I find solace in the quiet corners of my flat or the comforting embrace of my bed, each moment of stillness offers me a sanctuary from the outside world's relentless noise.

In these precious pauses, the clamor of everyday life fades into the background, and I turn inward. Alone with my thoughts and the quiet whispers of my inner needs, I rediscover a sense of balance and strength that often remains hidden amid chaos. Here, in the soft glow of silence, creativity awakens, and hope blooms anew.

Embracing this calm not only eases my stress but also nurtures a deeper understanding of who I am. In the stillness, I learn to listen to the gentle rhythm of my heart, finding inspiration in every quiet breath.

Silence is...Pain

Woman, poland
Silence holds undeniable power in my life—a force both essential and multifaceted. We often see it as serene, a balm for the mind. Yet silence can cut deeper than any sound.

Too much stillness becomes a foe, letting unwanted thoughts spiral unchecked. Worse is silence born of loss or wielded like a weapon, sharpening into emotional torment.
Once, silence was my refuge. I imagined it as a calm sea at dawn—waves whispering, birds gliding, a solitude blending peace and loneliness.

But time revealed its darker shades: hours, days, weeks of hollow quiet. It’s the unanswered question, the isolation in a crowd, the chasm beside someone you love, their gaze piercing through you as emptiness thickens.

When it breaks, relief floods in—not clarity, but an end to the chaos. Yet the memory remains, a testament to silence’s duality: once a sanctuary, now a haunting void I dread to face again.
